Joan Cortés - Teorema de l'espai

“Teorema de l'espai” (“Theory of Space”) is an installation project, which the Majorcan artist Joan Cortés develops individually for each exhibition site. With this project, the artist investigates the concept of space and how objects arranged in space can alter the viewer’s perception. His media encompass everyday objects, such as tables, which he presents individually or in groups. No two installations are the same, since each is the result of an investigation into the specific spatial situation of the respective site.

“Teorema de l'espai” emerged out of a singular work of art created for the printer’s workshop 6A in Palma and was gradually developed further into a complete installation, which is to be understood as a “work in progress”. Following a venue in London in 2013, it is now being presented for the first time ever in Germany. The exhibition is supported by the Institut d’Estudis Baleàrics and the Government of the Balearic Islands.

Joan Cortés (1964, Pollensa, Majorca) is one of the most distinguished artists of the Balearic Islands. In his highly acclaimed, multidisciplinary work, he focuses primarily on the concept of space, which he investigates with regard to the interrelationships between man, space and object. His works are included in numerous private and public collections and museums in Spain, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
